Windows on two sides of a room balance daylight and create a spacious feeling; windows on just one side of a room create a cave-like feeling and promote glare. Windows set high in a wall can provide daylight while preserving privacy; however a room with these high windows, often called clerestories, will feel tight and boxy if it does not also have lower windows on another wall for views. A window wall that wraps around the end of a room, can be an especially dramatic way to celebrate a view -- as long as there is an overhang to protect from too much direct sunlight.
This minimal, modern cottage makes a great lake home, with ample decks, porches and a hot tub on its "lakefront" side. Size and cost are kept to a minimum, but the vaulted ceilings in the main space and bedrooms lend a feeling of spaciousness, while the open plan and large windows and glass doors of the main space bring the outside in. The walls and overhang at the master bedroom are set up for a future screened porch.
More detailed floor plans include “dimension strings” to locate windows, doors, walls and other architectural elements. Dimension strings are drawn parallel to the element with 45º “hash marks” at each end of the dimension string indicating where the measurement starts and ends
Window seats, banquettes, stairways that include room for storage or display, and built-in desks are some of the built-in features that can make smaller spaces feel larger, as in a guest bedroom.
